Maintaining the overall guest experience is a shared responsibility, but decisions regarding guest conduct and enforcement are the responsibility of Belleville management.
Merchant Responsibilities
Merchants are encouraged to remain aware of activity within their space and to promptly notify Belleville staff when concerns arise. Situations that should be reported include, but are not limited to:
- Disruptive or aggressive behavior
- Harassment of guests, merchants, or team members
- Verbal threats or intimidation
- Suspected theft or shoplifting
- Safety concerns or suspicious activity
- Guests who appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Individuals creating disturbances that negatively impact the shopping experience
- Hygiene or conduct concerns that materially affect guests, merchants, or staff
- Any situation that causes a merchant to feel unsafe or uncomfortable
If you observe any of the above, please notify Guest Services or the Manager on Duty immediately.
What Merchants Should Not Do
For the safety of everyone involved, merchants should not:
- Confront guests regarding behavior concerns
- Ask guests to leave the building
- Attempt to physically intervene in any situation
- Pursue suspected shoplifters
- Threaten or argue with guests
- Contact law enforcement on behalf of Belleville Market unless there is an immediate emergency
These situations should be handled by Belleville management.
Belleville's Approach
Belleville Market strives to treat all individuals with dignity, respect, and professionalism. We recognize that guests come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances, and our goal is always to create a welcoming environment whenever possible.
At the same time, Belleville has a responsibility to maintain an atmosphere that supports shopping, hospitality, and community gathering. When intervention becomes necessary, decisions are based on behavior, safety concerns, conduct, or conditions that materially impact the guest experience—not on an individual's personal circumstances, appearance, housing status, or background.
If a situation requires immediate attention:
- Notify the nearest Guest Services team member or Manager on Duty.
- If you cannot locate a team member, contact the store directly.
- If there is an immediate threat to personal safety, call 911 and then notify Belleville management as soon as possible.
Remember
As a merchant, your role is to observe, report, and allow management to handle the situation.
If something feels wrong, unsafe, or disruptive, do not hesitate to notify the Belleville team. We would rather investigate a concern that turns out to be nothing than miss a situation that impacts the safety of our guests, merchants, or staff.
