Reporting Missing Merchandise & Inventory Loss

Belleville Market takes inventory loss, theft, and merchandise security seriously. While theft is not a widespread issue within our store, occasional inventory loss can occur in any retail environment.

To help protect merchant inventory, Belleville Market utilizes a network of security cameras throughout the store and continually evaluates opportunities to improve coverage and visibility.

If you believe merchandise from your selling space is missing, stolen, or otherwise unaccounted for, please follow the steps below.

Report Missing Merchandise Promptly

If you discover an item is missing:
  1. Notify a member of Belleville Market management as soon as possible.
  2. Submit a Merchant Loss Report Form. Click here to submit a Loss Report
  3. Provide as much information as possible, including item description, SKU, date last seen, and any other relevant details.
Prompt reporting increases the likelihood that we can identify what happened and review any available information.

Investigation Process

Upon receiving a report, Belleville Market may:
  1. Review inventory records
  2. Search common misplacement areas
  3. Review available security camera footage
  4. Look for patterns involving similar incidents
  5. Verify inventory counts and transaction history
While we will make reasonable efforts to assist with investigations, not all missing merchandise incidents can be conclusively resolved.

Inventory Accuracy Matters

One of the most important tools for investigating missing merchandise is accurate inventory.

All merchants are expected to maintain current and accurate inventory records in ConsignCloud.

The quantity listed in ConsignCloud should always match the quantity physically available in your selling space.

Accurate inventory helps:
  1. Identify losses more quickly
  2. Determine when an item may have gone missing
  3. Eliminate confusion caused by inventory discrepancies
  4. Improve the effectiveness of investigations

Merchandising & Loss Prevention

A well-maintained selling space is one of the best deterrents to theft.

Merchants are encouraged to:
  1. Keep spaces neat, organized, and fully merchandised
  2. Avoid excessive clutter
  3. Maintain proper pricing and tagging
  4. Conduct regular inventory checks
  5. Utilize security tags where appropriate
Organized spaces make it easier for both merchants and Belleville Market staff to identify merchandise that may be missing or out of place.

Documentation & Insurance

We strongly recommend that merchants:
  1. Photograph their selling space regularly
  2. Maintain accurate inventory records
  3. Keep documentation of high-value merchandise
  4. Carry appropriate business insurance coverage
Please note that Belleville Market does not provide insurance coverage for merchant inventory or personal property.

Limitation of Liability

While Belleville Market maintains security measures and will assist with investigations when possible, Belleville Market is not responsible for losses resulting from theft, damage, misplacement, or other causes.

Merchants assume responsibility for their inventory and are encouraged to maintain appropriate insurance coverage for their business.
